It Ain't Al Jolson's "Mammie"

Anonymous 7:33 PM left this comment in To Be Or Not To Be that we didn't want buried in the comments :

When is Mayor going to realize that he has a time bomb ticking right outside his office? Does he know what his wife calls the two black women that work on HIS staff. Mammie and Bernie Mac! Enough is enough Mayor you need to tell your wife to go home and stay home! The citizens of KC elected you to the Mayoral position not your wife! Now that these racist names have been made public by a discrimation complaint to the EOC, then I think you need to WAKE UP!

Well, well, well it seems that The First Family Funk-Squitiro Of Kansas City are on a roll - the Archie Bunker Family of the new milenia. Funk ticks off the Hispanics/Latinos nationwide; Funkette, some months ago, in an article in Kansas City Magazine implied that all Italians were on the take and part of the Mafia and now, those from the "black part of town" are Mammies and Bernie Macs - (and she's the one that knows about birthin' babies, humm). We should nominate her for some sort of recognition award for cultural insensitivity. All of this in just a mere 7 months; we can hardly wait to see what unfolds over the next 41 months. We still have the Native Americans, Chinese, Laotian, Arabs, Irish, French, Indonesians, Canadians etc, etc to insult. What a World Class City they are making us.

Don't take this as support for Mrs. Funk, but, word is that "Mammie" also wants a higher salary. So, what are we supposed to take from this, that it's ok to be called "Mammie" if the price is right?

Those salaries are public record, right? Please post them....
(And see if you can find out about these people's educational backgrounds, too. Are they making $70,00-$90,000 annually without degrees?)

Regardless if "Mammie" wants a higher salary, it still does not give Mrs. Funk the right to call anyone "Mammie" or "Bernie Mac" in this day and age. Wouldn't you want a higher salary working in that office with Kansas City's version of the "Beverly Hillbillies".

What? "The word is" this "woman" makes half what the other "women" make but for the color of her skin. What is it that our Human Resources Department does, and just who in the Mayor's office sets salaries anyway?

To anonymous 1:15 a.m. Her salary shouldn't be compared to the other women in the office but to those doing the same job. I would hope we are past a M/F salary scale.

By the way, isn't this the employee responsible for vetting board appointments? Maybe she has been docked.

Gloria, if you know what is about to happen to you, press wise, you will put on your shoes and GO HOME!! EVERYONE, I repeat EVERYONE hates that you are the uneducated spokesperson for the mayor. Some may pretend to accept your position, to keep their jobs, but make NO mistake EVERYONE hates the fact that you are there. Go back to being the housewife or better yet get a real job so our Mayor's office can get to real business.

"This woman" as you chose to call her does indeed want a city hall salary commensurate to what we are paying for a like position in city hall. She does indeed work on appointments to boards and commissions. The only complaint in her area, the racist Francis Semler appointment, was taken out of her hands and put into Gloria Squitiro's. There was some hemming and hawing by Mayor Funkhouser about there being no process in place when he seated Semler. That is a bald faced lie. There were hundreds of citizens who APPLIED for a spot on the Park And Rec board. Squitiro picked a woman who did not apply and was not vetted by the proper staff in place. I too would reject the notion that Squitiro could call me a racist name. I too would reject the sexual innuendos that torpedo out of Squitiro's mouth into the unprofessional, hostile environment that is Mayor Funkhouser's office. If Squitiro goosed an exchange student in front of me, I would have to act like an adult and make complaint to the proper authorities. I would not accept a dressing down by our Mayor that when speaking to his wife it is as if I were speaking to him. Thus all due respect, authority and deference will be accorded to her. ( Okay, not verbatim, but pretty darn close)Check out the office chain of command. I kid you not, Squitiro has the same power as the Mayor when he is out of town. This has been reiterated at staff meetings. I would not standby like the less stellar Ed Wolff and assume a do nothing position.
So here are two questions:
1. Is Squitiro an employee of City Hall, thus would use the Legal Department should the two complaints reach the court room? (Since she used a Water services attorney in May of '04 to change the last names of her kids it seems likely she would not shrink from using city hall legal staff again.) Paying her a nominal token should not satisfy a legal requirement.
2. Is it standard practice to separate the plaintiff from the likely defendant? Should Squitiro be moved to another office space, possibly one contained in her home?

(((Dear moderator,
I know you are slightly uneasy about some of my posts. Think back to the ones you declined. well. I was right. Please feel free to edit out any portion.)))

1:15 - you really think her skin color got her paid less? Why don't you look up the boards and commissions on the city's web site. They haven't been updated, and it's been 6 months. This woman was supposed to be working specifically on boards and commissions and she's done a lousy job. She knew what she would be paid when she took the job - no one forced her to take it! I don't get paid the same as every person in my office either - maybe because we all have different jobs and different expectations. I might think differently if she had been employed for many years when the funk's came along - but she came with them, she knew what she was getting into salary-wise.

It's coming back to you Gloria. I promise. I told you!! EVERYONE is sick and tired of you, and the punk mayor. Go home and let your husband mess up for himself.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Mayor,

I am absolutely appalled that in the 21st Century you would exhibit such immature racially insensitive behavior, let alone condone it. And to take the position of brow-beating staff that try to point out the naive (benefit of the doubt)behavior as saying that when you speak to Gloria it's as tough we're speaking to you, The Mayor. How absolutely absurd! On what basis do you make such a statement? We, the people, did not elect Gloria Squitiro to any position, nor is she a paid employee of the City. Her position warrants her no more or less respect based on her own behavior, than any of the other myriad of civic volunteers who spend untold hours benefiting neighborhoods and serving the City. What service does she provide? As far as I can determine, City staff are spending way too much time cleaning up her messes.

But here's the real rub. Respect has to be earned, and you, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor have probably blown it so badly that you'll never have the respect that you crave so much. Somehow you think that having been elected into the position of Mayor, that somehow entitles you to be ignorant and down right stupid and above being challenged for being so. To say that you're not a political insider is not the same as saying that you are not politically aware. Personally I feel that you, Mr. Mayor, are a fraud that sold himself as something he is not. That is deceitful and for that I will never respect you. And not that you care, you've made that very obvious, but these sentiments seem to be the talk of the town. I can't tell you how many people have commented on their embarassment for having voted you into office. Well, while it's highly likely that you've lost any real opportunity to build respect for yourself(ves), it's very highly likely that you'll go down in public humiliation as the first Mayor to go through a recall election. Congratulations, I'd say you've earned that!

If you truly care about this City, you'll get over the public need to demonstrate your childish junior high school romance, and you'll get down to the business of running the City. There is no way that you can build the kind of coalitions necessary to get desired programs through the budgeting process if you don't send Gloria back to the homestead where she and Tara can scamper around barefoot and in whatever state of dress or undress that they desire. They do not belong in City government, and soon, Mr. Mayor, you may find yourself gone as well, if you don't start taking the public opinion of these behaviors seriously. Enough is enough already. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED! You and your family owe this City a huge apology for all the damage that you've done.

Do we erect a poster of Hattie McDaniel in full "Mammy" regalia at the airport to greet the NAACP? Any hope of keeping under wraps your family's racist tendencies, Mayor, is gone with the wind.

Under any circumstances, should we be having to carry on an online conversation about our mayor's wife calling the mayor's staff "mammie" and "Bernie Mac"? On one end of the hall we have federally illegal discrmination in the mayor's office and on the other we have pornography and cover up - and the media is not beating a path to the door? what in the world is going on here?

I never cared for Bernie Mac. Dave Chapelle is a term of endearment, in my book.

Evert Asjes resigned today as Funkhouser's campaign treasurer. Thank you, Evert, for showing class in a tawdry situation. Let's see how Squit and Squat spin this one.

Mammy? Say it ain't so. I was raised by parents of racist parents, who whilethey would not overtly say racist comments but implied them. When i was nine years old, on my own, i figured out that n-words, remarks about class, color, etc., was not okay. Referring to anyone as mammy is so not okay particularly to a person of color (i used to wear head scarves and it wouldn't have gone down by me without a fight) AND i voted for the guy-can i have my vote back please....Please end the gloria nightmare.
